What to expect after your glow—and why it happens.

Facials are one of the best ways to refresh, reset, and rebalance your skin, but what happens after the appointment can sometimes catch people by surprise. Two of the most common post-facial experiences are purging and dryness, and while they’re normal, it helps to understand why they occur and what they mean for your skin’s healing process.
At Peonies Beauté, located in San Jose and proudly serving the Bay Area, we guide our clients through every stage of their skincare journey—including what to expect after your treatment. Here’s a deeper look into post-facial effects and why your skin might react the way it does.
Why Purging Happens After a Facial
Purging is often misunderstood, and many people mistake it for “breaking out.” However, purging is actually a sign that your facial is doing exactly what it's supposed to do: speeding up cell turnover and bringing deep congestion to the surface.

What Causes Purging?
During a facial, especially one that includes professional exfoliation, extractions, or active enzymes, your skin goes through several changes:
Increased cell turnover: Treatments like peels, exfoliants, and enzyme therapies encourage the skin to shed old cells faster. As a result, underlying congestion rises to the surface more quickly than it would on its own.
Stimulation of the sebaceous glands: Massage, warmth, and steam can stimulate oil flow, helping impurities move upward.
Deep pore cleansing: Extractions remove clogged debris, but pores that were on the verge of clogging may still push out impurities in the days following.
Who Is More Likely to Purge?
Purging is more common if you have what we call “problem skin,” such as:
Very congested or acne-prone skin
Blackhead-heavy areas
Not having had facials regularly(If it's your first facial or your first in a long time, there’s more buildup to bring up.)
Those starting active skincare at home (like retinol, acids, or exfoliants after a treatment)
If your skin has a lot of underlying congestion—whiteheads, closed comedones, oil buildup—the facial accelerates the clearing phase. This temporary breakout phase is part of the skin resurfacing and healing.
How Long Does Purging Last?
Typically 3–10 days after a facial, depending on your skin type and the intensity of your treatment.
If your breakout lasts longer than two weeks or looks inflamed rather than surface-level, it may be irritation rather than purging—something your esthetician can help you evaluate.
Why Dryness Happens After a Facial
Even though facials are known for delivering hydration and glow, it’s also completely normal to experience temporary dryness afterward. This is especially true if the treatment focused on exfoliation, acne clearing, or peels.

What Causes Dryness?
Dryness can occur because:
Exfoliation removes the dead surface layer, revealing fresh skin that may feel tighter or more sensitive.
Peels and active exfoliants can disrupt the skin’s moisture barrier for a few days as it rebuilds.
Deep cleansing can strip excess oil, especially in oily or acne-prone clients.
Extractions can leave the skin tender in certain areas.
Dryness is usually temporary and resolves within a few days with proper post-care.
How to Support Your Skin After a Facial
To minimize irritation and help your skin recover smoothly, here are some Peonies Beauté-approved aftercare tips:
Keep your routine simple
Avoid actives for 48–72 hours:
Retinol
AHA/BHA exfoliants
Vitamin C (if your skin is sensitive)
Strong acne treatments
Use gentle, barrier-supporting products.
Hydrate generously
Look for:
Hyaluronic acid
Ceramides
Niacinamide
Lightweight moisturizers for acne-prone skin
Richer creams for dry or mature skin
Avoid heat and sweat for 24 hours
Saunas, hot yoga, intense exercise—all can increase inflammation after a facial.
Don’t pick at purging breakouts
Let the skin naturally push out congestion. Picking delays healing and can cause post- inflammatory marks.
Use sunscreen daily
Freshly exfoliated skin is more vulnerable to UV damage.
When to Worry—And When Not To
Normal:
Tiny whiteheads appearing 1–4 days post-facial
Sandpaper-like texture
Mild dryness or tightness
Slight redness around extraction areas
Not normal:
Severe burning or stinging
Worsening painful cystic acne
Rash-like bumps
Purging lasting beyond 14 days
If you’re unsure, our estheticians at Peonies Beauté is always here to help you evaluate what’s normal and what needs attention.
Your Skin Is Healing—Trust the Process
Purging and dryness aren’t setbacks—they’re part of the skin’s renewal cycle after a professional facial. With consistency and the right treatments, these temporary effects give way to clearer, healthier, more radiant skin.
